Mariners chalk up win against SoHi

The Homer Mariners varsity baseball team defeated the Soldotna Stars 8-0 on Monday night at Mariner field in Homer.

Kyle Johnson pitched a complete game shutout for the win, with three strikeouts and only two walks.

The Mariners were solid defensively all night. Third baseman Wylie Donich, second baseman Brandon Beachy and first baseman Sheldon Hutt turned a nifty 5-4-3 double play, and center fielder Owen Delehanty made a fine diving catch on a sinking line drive to help preserve the shutout.

“Wylie fielded the hard ground ball at third,” said Beachy. “I went to cover second and knew it would be close so I threw as hard as I could to Sheldon.”

The Homer bats came to life as well, with Evan Boyer driving in two runs with a base hit in the first inning.

“It felt great to get that hit. It popped up more than I wanted it to, but when I saw where it was landing (behind second base but out of the reach of the outfield) I started smiling. It was great to get one quarter of the game’s runs with one swing of the bat,” said Boyer.

JJ Sonnen (double) and Delehanty also had RBI base hits. Michael Swoboda (two hits) and Brandon Beachy (double) contributed hits.

“I’m proud of the team effort,” Beachy said.

JV won their game v. Sohi 5 to 4. Garrett Butcher pitched six innings and Adam Brinster pitched in relief for the final inning.

Next up for the Mariners are home games against Kodiak at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
