Spring sports gain momentum, volunteers needed
Homer High School’s track is home to track and field action this Friday and Saturday with 11 schools participating in the Homer Invite.
In addition to watching some top athletes perform, the public also has an opportunity to assist with the event, according to Head Coach Bill Steyer.
“It takes a lot of people,” he said of help needed.
On Friday, field events begin at 1 p.m. and running events at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events at noon.
While track and field athletes are competing here in Homer, the Mariner softball team will be participating in the Skyview Softball Jamboree in Skyview on April 18-19. They follow up with a game against Skyview at Skyview on April 28.
Head Coach Bill Bell told the Homer News in March that he is “predicting that we are going to give it our all and play our best and we’ll see what happens.”
A change in scheduling is pushing back the Mariner soccer season. It was to begin with games against Juneau-Douglas High School on April 18-19; however, those have been cancelled. Instead, the boys’ and girls’ first games will be against Wasilla in Homer on April 25.
“I think this is the strongest team in years that Homer has put out,” said Head Coach Warren Waldorf.
“Come out and watch.”
Mickey Todd, head coach for the girls team, said the girls also are hard at work preparing for the first game.
The Mariners’ first baseball of the season is in Kodiak on April 25-26.
“The team is looking strong,” said Head Coach Mark Putney.
“We are starting to move into more game-like situations. The clear, cold weather has allowed us to get outside more often.”
Kodiak offers the Homer team some excellent competition. Putney said he will travel with 20 plays, playing two JV games and two varsity games.
“Last year, they went to state along with Colony from our region,” said Putney of the Kodiak team.
“I expect close games. Hopefully, we’ll be able to limit mistakes and gain valuable experience. I’m excited to get out on the field and play, instead of just talking about our upcoming season.”
