Popeye wrestlers head for Seward

The Homer Middle School Husky and Chapman School Eagle wrestling teams went to Soldotna on Friday for a tune-up before this weekend’s Borough Championships. Members were put into pools and wrestled two or three matches in each pool.

Eagles Wayne Newman, 90 pounds, and Luciano Fasulo, 105, each won matches by fall and will be ranked No. 1 in their weight classes this coming weekend. Teammates Tyler Johnson, 125, and Kyle Wells, 145, both won all their matches as well. Kyle Wells won two by pin and another 4-3. Hunter Harrington and Allison Wells split their two matches, while Jack Heimbold battled tough, but lost his two matches.

For the HMS Huskies, Teddy Croft, 132 pinned both his opponents in the first round and will be the no. 1 seed this next weekend, as well as teammate and returning borough champion Tristen Cook, 138. Cook beat his main competition, Trayton Bird of Soldotna, 2-0. Cook scored a two-point reversal in the third period to seal the victory.

Other teammates Levi King, 145, Wyatt Alborn, 155, and McKenzie Cook, 110, won their matches and look to be a contender for top three this coming weekend. Dexter Lowe, 85, split his two matches, while Ian Stoval, 80, and Fiona Green, 155, lost their matches despite great effort.

The Borough tournament will be in Seward on Saturday, beginning at noon.
