Mariner girls earn first in carnival tournament

With the Homer Winter Carnival in full swing, and weather bouncing from blizzard to blue skies, Homer High School’s Alice Witte Gymnasium was filled with three days of basketball action last week. Teams representing Delta Junction, Grace Christian, King Cove, Tikigaq kept the court busy beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing through Saturday.

When the dust settled, the Delta Junction boys and the the Mariner girls were tournament champions. Homer players named to the all-tournament team were Tayla Cabana and Madison Akers for the girls and Kenneth Schneider and Quinn Daugharty for the boys. Daugherty was named tournament MVP and Sheldon Hutt received a skills competiton award.

The Homer Mariners’ first games were Thursday against Delta, with the girls scheduled for 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. A change in the schedule, moving the boys to a 4 p.m. slot, eliminated a conflict with Homer’s first hockey game in Regions competition (see related story, this page), making it possible for a large and loud crowd to attend the hockey game at the Kevin Bell Arena.

During breaks in the basketball tournament, the crowd was entertained by the Bruins, elementary school-aged basketball teams organized through Homer Parks and Recreation.

Friday, the Mariner JVs play Seldovia at Homer, beginning at 10 a.m. The varsity teams have a few days to regroup, before two games scheduled for next week:

Feb. 21: Anchorage Christian School at ACS;

Feb. 22: Grace Christian School
at GCS.
