Nikolaevsk boys, girls take second in Warrior Rumble

It was a five-school rumble at the ConocoPhillips Nikolaevsk Warrior Dome on Jan. 16-18, with Birchwood Christian, Kalskag, Nenana, Nikolaevsk and Skyview heating up the boards.

Nenana took first place in the boys competition, with Nikolaevsk in second and Kalskag in third. In the girls competition, Skyview took first place, Nikolaevsk second and Nenana third.

Nikolaevsk’s Jaruby Nelson and Nenana’s Edna Standifer were named the tournament’s MVPs. Nikolaevsk boys on the all-tournament team were Neil Gordeev, Jaruby Nelson, Anthony Yakunin and Jonah Fefelov. On the girls all-tournament team were Nikolaevsk players Sophia Kalugin, Serafima Kalugin, Nianiella Dorvall and Kilina Klaich.

Competition between the girls’ teams was tight. Nikolaevsk Head Coach Bea Klaich could see the writing on the wall after the Nikolaevsk girls suffered a six-point defeat to Skyview on the first day of play.

“I knew that there was a chance for us to redeem ourselves and win the tournament after all if we could beat both Birchwood and Nenana,” said Coach Klaich. “My girls did just that. They came out on fire against Nenana and played one of the best games as a team that I’ve seen this year.”

A final three-way tie between the Nenana, Skyview and Nikolaevsk girls teams was decided by a point count and Nenana took first.

“The ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble was a great success,” said Nikolaevsk boys team Head Coach Steve Klaich.

“I appreciate our sponsors, parents and volunteers more than words can express.”

Of the Nikolaevsk boys team, Coach Steve Klaich said the team chemistry looked great with the players working well together.

“I was very pleased at how (they) played,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Warriors welcomed Ninilchik to the Warrior Dome. On Wednesday, Lumen Christi girls and boys teams traveled to Nikolaevsk, followed by the Nanwalek boys team today.
