Mariner boys take first place in Nikiski’s 3-day tourney
The Mariner boys walked off with the Nikiski Tip Off Tournament title after winning three basketball games in three days.
Quinn Daugharty was named the boys tournament MVP, with Shelton Hutt and Kenneth Schneider named to the boys All-Tournament team.
The Mariner girls team won one of their three games. Tayla Cabana and Madison Akers were named to the girls All-Tournament team.
On Jan. 16, the first day of the tournament, the Homer girls claimed a 41-28 victory over Houston. Homer picked up the lead in the first quarter and stayed ahead of the Hawks for the remainder of the game. Madison Akers scored 13 points; Abbey Luck and Tayla Cabana each scored nine.
The boys team followed with a 65-55 win over Houston. Houston led after the first quarter, but the Mariners stepped out in front by the half and held the lead. Sheldon Hutt scored 20 points, Quinn Daugharty had 17 and Filip Reutov had 12.
The following day, the Homer girls lost to Nikiski 60-35, Cabana scoring nine points. Also facing Nikiski, the Mariner boys secured a lead during the first quarter and held on tight, scoring a 62-55 win. Daugharty had 27 points, Reutov and Kenneth Schneider claimed 10 points each.
On the final day of the tournament, Homer girls faced Dillingham, losing the game 47-39. Akers scored 17 points.
“We were behind, but went on a scoring run to tie the game at 33-33,” said Head Coach Connie Akers. “We just couldn’t hold onto it. Aurora Waclawski, our point guard, fouled out in the third quarter and Maggie Koplin, our other starting guard, was in Portland, playing soccer.”
In the boys game against Dillingham, Homer secured a 65-42 win. Daugharty had 16 points, Hutt had 15 and Martin Molodih had 13.
Friday, the Mariners play in Seward and then travel to the Whaler Invite in Barrow Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
