Figure skaters young and old took over the Kevin Bell Arena on Sunday afternoon. With cameras flashing and fans applauding, the skaters showed off the moves they’ve been learning, thanks to weSKATE manager Andrea Stineff; coaches Megan Magee, McKinzie Parker and Natalie Betley; and full-time helper Priscilla Andrade.

“The weSKATE program under the ISI (International Skating Institute) umbrella began this September 2013,” said Stineff. “We currently have 44 registered skaters.”

With her 6-year-old daughter dreaming of being an “ice dancer,” Stineff was determined to do her part.

“Fortunately Shelly Laukitis was already looking for a skating program,” said Stineff. “She found ISI, I found Megan, Megan found McKinzie and together we made it a reality.”

Coaches Magee and Parker have been skating for years under ISI in Soldotna.

Classes are from 1:30-2:15 p.m. and 2:15-3 p.m. on Sundays. Two of four scheduled sessions remain: session 3 from Jan. 5-Feb. 9 and session 4 from Feb. 16-March 23.

“Currently, the 1:30-2:15 time slot has been for tots 2-4 years of age; however, we have added an additional class at that time to absorb beginners ages 5 and up,” said Stineff. “Numbers for session 3 will dictate if that is to continue.”

The 2:15-3 p.m. time slot is for ages 5 through adult. Cost is $75 per six-week session, plus a $15 annual ISI membership fee.

In addition to classes, there are lots of opportunities for the public to enjoy skating, meet Santa and cheer for their favorite local hockey teams.
