Lady Ms dominate softball action in Houston, Wasilla games

The Homer Lady Mariners dominated on the road last weekend, shutting out the Houston Hawks twice by scores of 27-0 in a Friday doubleheader, and picking up a 10-2 win on Saturday against the Wasilla Warriors.

Friday’s inaugural Valley game showed the Mariner bat speed early as they tallied 15 runs in the first inning alone. Senior Hannah LaRue led the offense with a single, double and a triple, which brought four runs across the plate in an offensive performance that was just a home-run shy of hitting for the cycle.

Freshman pitcher McKi Needham threw two shutout innings which tallied five strikeouts and one hit in the win.

Six Mariner batters combined for 14 hits, 20 RBIs and 17 earned runs as Head Coach Bill Bell explained that they tried to use it as a chance to practice some of the other offensive strategies that they had been working on in their practices.

Later that day the teams re-matched in what was a momentous day for LaRue.

She threw a no-hitter against the Houston offense, striking out five batters and walking one in her performance. The Mariners kept it rolling offensively, scoring 19 first inning runs.

A bases-loaded walk from Larsen Fellows was the spark for another eight runs for the victors in the second inning as the Lady Ms combined for 17 hits, accounting for 17 RBIs and 23 earned runs.

On Saturday, the Mariners had their targets locked on the Wasilla Warriors in what was a one run Mariner lead throughout the first three innings thanks to a Miranda Beach triple.

LaRue led the Mariner defense once again at the pitching role, striking out eight batters and allowing just two earned runs off of six hits. Beach led the offense with a two run home-run in the fifth inning after already managing an inside the park home-run earlier in the game.

The Mariners finished the game with a 10-2 win in what was a dominating offensive and defensive performance throughout.

The Mariners host a weekend of softball at Jack Gist Field beginning tonight at 7 where they take on the Kenai Kardinals.

Friday evening the Mariners host the East Anchorage softball team in a double header beginning at 5 p.m. The games conclude with another doubleheader against Service High School Saturday at 10 a.m.
