The Mariner girls finish strong in the 400 meter dash on Saturday. In yellow shirts, from left, are Cassidy Soistman, Tayla Cabana, Aurora Waclawski and Aziza Shemet-Pitcher.

The Homer Mariners and Huskies collectively hosted the 2013 Kenai Peninsula Borough Finals on Friday and Saturday at the Homer High School track. The track drew12 other schools from the peninsula’s middle and high school’s track and field talent.

The girls team of the Homer Middle School Huskies showed their young talent, finishing Saturday’s finals action with a first place team score of 167, more than 20 points above second place Kenai Middle School.

Kenai’s boys, however, took first place with 127 points. The Husky boys finished with 65 total points and third place. Eighth-grader Andrew Doughty had a great showing, taking first place in the 200-meter dash (27.88), second in the 100-meter dash (12.97), and third place in the 400-meter dash (59.64). Seventh-grader Charles Rohr also had a good outing, jumping 29 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump competition for fifth place and placing fourth in the 800-meter run (2:32.40), and second in the 1600 meters with a time of (5:31.52).

The Husky girls blew away their competition on Saturday, taking first place in 10 of the 14 events held. Placing first in three events, eighth-grader Lilly Johnson took out her competition in the 100- and 200-meter dash, with times of 13.93 and 29.50. She also out leaped her opponents in the triple jump, with a distance of 27 feet, 2.5 inches.

Homer’s Lauren Cardwell, Sarah Wolf and Nyla Green took first, second and third place honors in the 400-meter dash. Megan Pitzman took first place in the 800 and 1600 Meter runs. The Husky girls also swept the competition in 100-meter hurdles as first and second place went to Uliana Reutov and Lauren Evarts respectively.  The 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads also dominated with first place victories and to round off the gold medal honors, Mariah Hendrickson high-jumped 4 feet, 6 inches, just enough for another Husky top finish.

During the high school finals, the Kenai Central High Kardinal men claimed superiority while they tallied 192 points collectively. The Mariner men followed in fifth place with 29. The Lady Kardinals scored 162 total points, sweeping the girls’ division as well. The Lady Mariners finished in third with 70 points.

Senior Sam Reinert scored most of the Mariners’ points, taking second place in the 200-meter dash (25.48) and third in the 400-meter dash (55.19). Sophomore Conner Seay was the only other Mariner man to make a top three finish, with a time of 45.95 seconds and second place in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Lady Mariners may have found their star relay team in Casey Farrell, Barae Hirsch, Molly Mitchell and Aurora Waclawski as they finished first in the 4x800 meter relay. The relay team finished more than 20 seconds in front of the second place Soldotna Stars with a time just more than 10 minutes, 30 seconds. Junior Tayla Cabana managed to be the only Lady Mariner to finish in second place last weekend, jumping 14 feet, 7 inches during Saturday’s long jump. Placing third in the 400-meter dash was Aurora Waclawski. Another third place finish came from Farrell in the 1600 meter run with relay running mate Barae Hirsch finishing two seconds behind her in fourth place.

With a successful Borough Championship meet under their belt, Coach Bill Steyer and the Mainer athletes have their eyes set on the Region III Championships which will take place at the Nikiski High School track on Saturday.
