Grizzly Classic bodes well for Lady Mariners

Both Homer Mariners basketball teams took part in the 2012 Grace Christian Grizzly Basketball Classic in Anchorage last weekend. The four-team tournament featured Homer, Grace, Dimond and Soldotna for the boy’s bracket.

The Mariners lost against Grace, Soldotna and Dimond to secure their last place finish while the Dimond Lynx went on to defeat the Mariners on Saturday to protect their first place winnings.

Despite the Mariner losses, Kenneth Schneider and Drew Brown were selected for all-tournament honors for the boys.

The Lady Mariners, however, had success during their games as they were matched up against Grace, Bethel and Service in their three-day tournament.

After losing to the Grizzlies in the opening day of action, the Lady Mariners made television by defeating the Bethel Warriors 40-38 in overtime. Homer then defeated the Service Cougars in the final game which tied them with the Grace Christian Grizzlies for first place.

Due to their lower combined free-throw percentage throughout the tournament, the Lady Mariners took second place in the 2012 Grizzly classic.

Both the Mariner teams will host their alumni games on Saturday, beginning with the girl’s game at 6 p.m.
