Divas take Soldotna, 5-2, in adult hockey

By INGRID HARRALD

It was a busy weekend at the Kevin Bell ice rink. With the high cchool hockey team up the road for a tournament, the Homer Adult League took advantage of the ice.

The Divas, Homer’s women’s hockey team, had their first game of the season against Soldotna on Saturday night. Soldotna brought a strong team with them, but was not able to get by Homer’s strong defense to score. The first period was rough for both teams, as they battled for control of the puck, neither team able to score. About 10 minutes into the game, Ori Badajos broke the silence with a shot right through the 5-hole. Goalie Karen Martinelli from Soldotna had stopped quite a few pucks, but this one was just out of reach. Soldotna came back with some powerful shots on goal, but goalie Lydia Brown from Homer stopped every one of them. Homer scored again at the very end of the first period with a shot by Jessie Cashman from the blue line.

During the second period, Soldonta made some line changes and Lacey Wisniewski took advantage of the new energy to score on Homer in the first few minutes of the period. With the score 2-1 Homer, Homer turned up the heat and scored two more goals in the second period, one by Kristen Brown and the other by Kate Crowley. Soldotna had one final push with a late goal in the second period, again by Wisniewski, to make the score 4-2 at the end of the second period. Third period the teams held steady with only one goal for Homer by Badajos to end the game 5-2 Homer.

Coed hockey was also in full swing on Saturday with two back to back games.

The first game matched the undefeated Dark Defensemen with Orange Crush-Em. The Defensemen scored a goal within minutes of the start of the game. Steve Nevak got the puck on the breakaway and goalie Josh Pitta had no time to stop the shot. Charlie Stewart followed with a wrist shot from the side that caught Pitta off guard. The score was 2-0 Defensemen at the end of the first period.

Second period brought new hope for the Orange Crush-em as Chris Owen found the twine and was able to get a puck past goalie Lydia Brown, putting Orange Crush on the board.

The Defensemen came back with a vengeance, with Matt and Andrea Stineff’s back-to-back couple’s goals to end the second period 4-1. Emily Hutchison decided to take things into her own hands by scoring another goal for Orange Crush. With the score 4-2 and the clock running out, Travis Brown ended the game with a top shelf goal for the Defensemen. The final score was 5-2, leaving the Defensemen undefeated.

The second game was Green Goons vs. Tighty Whities. Goons were missing some of their best players, and that was made clear to them in the first period when Nora Rojek had a beautiful shot to the back corner of the net. The Tighties had barely finished celebrating when Kristen Brown added another point for the team with a wrist shot from mid ice. With the score 2-0 first period, Jose DeCreeft fired up for the Green Goons and put them on the board with a breakaway shot. The first period ended 2-1 Tighty Whities.

The second period started strong for the Goons with Ingrid Harrald scoring her first goal of the season, and tying up the game. It didn’t last long once Dean Kildaw got the puck and used it to make a top shelf goal. This was followed by Russ Walker with a backhand shot that whizzed over goalie Josh Pitta’s shoulder into the net. Final score for the period was 4-2 Tighty Whities. Third period was uneventful, and goalies Lydia Brown and Josh Pitta were able to stop all the shots on goal. Final score 4-2 Tighty Whities.
