Lady Mariners split home games, beating Houston, falling to Cordova
The Lady Mariners went 1-1 at home last weekend as they hosted Houston and Cordova on Friday and Saturday.
Friday night the Mariners swept the Hawks 25-23, 25-19, and 25-15.
Hailey Oliver led the volleyball team in kills with 11 and 5 solo blocks. Kayla Hutt contributed nine kills. Hope Hudson and Caroline Decreeft accounted for 16 of Homer’s assists.
“Serving was the biggest difference between the two matches. As a team we served 94 percent against Houston, but against Cordova we served an 84 percent,” said Coach Beth Trowbridge.
The difference in serving percentage may have been the deciding factor as Homer lost in four close sets to Cordova on Saturday afternoon 23-25, 22-25, 25-20 and 24-26.
Hutt lead this game with 12 kills. Kristie Mastre got 12 digs, and Tayla Cabana led the Mariners with three solo blocks.
Trowbridge noted that this game could have ended differently if the Mariners could have focused more on their serves at key times in the match. She was also pleased with their blocking defense and communication.
This weekend, find your spot on a team in the annual Play Like Crazy Community Volleyball Tournament. The tourney is from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Following the tourney, the Mariners then host the Alice Witte Alumni challenge match at 6:30 p.m.
