The Homer Broomball League is hosting the End of the Road Broomball tournament this weekend.
With teams from as far away as Bethel and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, the weekend promises to be a competitive one.
Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday games begin at 10 a.m. and continue through 7 p.m.
The on-ice flash mob event is scheduled Saturday from 1-1:15 p.m.
“We always play to great music thanks to player Curt Jackson, and this season many of our ties were decided by a team ‘dance off’ of sorts to hits such as Gangham Style. So, we thought it’d be fun to invite everyone in town to join us in shooting a Kevin Bell Arena Harlem Shake before Broomball finals begin,” writes organizer Liz Villareal in a press release.
All ages are welcome, but are asked to bring clean, indoor shoes as well as a helmet to keep your head safe when you dance on the ice. Dirt and sand damage the ice, she said.
Alice’s Champagne Palace, the team sponsor of the Homer Scoundrels, will host a tournament banquet, music and silent auction at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Funds raised will go toward a broomball-in-the-schools program and the Homer Broomball League.
Down East Saloon, sponsor of the Down East Greyskulls, will host Friday night live music by Holy Santos Gang.
“Any tournament is a team effort, and we couldn’t have done this without the help of our financial sponsors: Alice’s Champagne Palace, Down East Saloon, Beluga Lake Lodge, Bulletproof Nets and the Alibi, as well as local business donations. We are so thankful for the generosity of our community,” writes Villareal.
