Divas crowned national champs

The Divas, Homer’s women’s hockey team, sent a team for the first time to the National Pond Hockey Tournament in Eagle River, Wis. The team was among more than 300 teams in 14 divisions from around the United States. Playing in five games, the Divas went undefeated to win the National Pond Hockey Championship Trophy in the women’s beginner division. They played teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and San Francisco. MVPs of regulations play included Lindsay Layland, Karyn Noyes and Marianne Aplin.

The semifinal game was close, won against the team from San Francisco 7-4 with Di Carbonell the MVP.

The championship game was against the returning champions from Grand Rapid, Mi. The game was physical, with the Divas a crowd favorite, but down 4-1 at the break between periods. However, they found their stride and came back to win the trophy by a score of 7-5. Kristen Brown was the MVP. The team’s trophy and banner can be seen displayed at the Kevin Bell Ice Arena beginning next week.
