Co-ed hockey mixes it up on ice

The second annual Homer Coed Adult Hockey Jamboree was held Oct. 24-26, at the Kevin Bell Arena, with 44 players from Juneau, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Kenai, Soldotna and Homer participating.

Using the jamboree format, players registered with no idea with whom they would be playing. Organizers created teams that provided for a fun and competitive atmosphere for all involved. Skill levels ranged from beginners to highly skilled, with ages ranged from 23 to 60.

Games began Friday night and continued through the weekend with the championship game at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. The tournament finished strong with two exciting games, including a nerve-wracking shootout for the championship. The East End Lucky Pucks took the title with a win over the Kachemak High Stickers. Anchorage’s Bryanna Forrest and Homer’s Scott Owen scored for the Lucky Pucks in a shootout. In the consolation match, Anchorage’s Dennis Lucey scored in the final minutes to secure a third-place victory for the End of the Roaders over the Spit Rats.

Organizers hope to expand the tournament next year to include more out-of-town players.  Thanks to all of the volunteers, score- and timekeepers and hospitality, and the great job done by the Homer referees. Organizers also thank the out-of-town players who traveled from the cold reaches of the north and the rainforest of Southeast Alaska to make this event possible.

Jan Rumble is the secretary of the Homer Hockey Association and Kevin Bell Arena and an organizer of the co-ed jamboree.
