Spiked Punch battles for crown in volleyball
The city of Homer Community Recreation co-ed volleyball league ended its season with an action-packed, double-elimination tournament over the weekend. New this year to the community recreation calendar, the co-ed league boasted seven teams that spiked, blocked and dove with varying levels of athleticism, through a 14-week season. Teams were seeded according to overall win-loss records and volleying for league champs began Friday.
In the first round, the quick and spunky Diggers played sensationally, but fell to the Aces, the number one seed filled with volleyball stalwarts. With six seasoned players to Team Wilson’s five, Spiked Punch, seeded second, used the mismatch to their advantage. Third seed Net Setters barely squeaked out a win against the sixth seeded Team Awesome.
After being defeated by the Net Setters in a hard fought match, the young, athletic and color-coordinated Spiked Punch spanked their way through the loser’s bracket to earn a rematch against the undefeated Net Setters. Thanks to consistent serving, dominant net play and slightly better verticals, Spiked Punch dominated the final match to earn the championship title and sprightly green t-shirts.
Third place went to The Aces, the team to beat all season, but missing key teammates due to spring break. Team Awesome pulled players out of the woodwork to assist and upset Diggers for fourth place. Team Wilson lost two tough matches but showed marked improvement from their first games of the season. Bumps and Bruises was unable to field a team due to scheduling conflicts.
All teams showed up with great attitudes and a willingness to enlist family and friends to help officiate when they couldn’t, making for an entertaining tournament and successful first season of league volleyball.
