Weekend hockey jamboree tournament 90-women strong
The Homer Women’s Hockey Jamboree Tournament was a huge success last weekend, with 90 women participating from Soldotna, Fairbanks, Juneau, Anchorage and Homer. Eight teams were divided into two divisions competing for the championship title. The final breakdown after regulation play was:
The Diamonds and Hearts Division
(team, wins, ties, losses):
Enforcing Elvises: 2, 1, 0
Bankrolling Backheckers: 2, 1, 0
Lucky Ladies: 1, 0, 2
Sin City Snipers: 0, 0, 3
Clubs and Spades Division
(teams, wins, ties, losses):
Roulette Ringers: 1, 0, 2
Dealing Divas: 3, 0, 0
High Rollin’ Hat Tricks: 0, 0, 3
Top Shelf Showgirls: 2, 0, 1
The championship game pitted the two undefeated teams against each other; Enforcing Elvises from the Diamonds and Hearts Divsion and the Dealing Divas from the Clubs and Spades. The game was fast paced from the beginning, but goalies Michelle Hatton of the Dealing Divas and Lydia Brown of the Enforcing Elvises both skillfully protected the net.
The first period remained scoreless. Both teams ramped up their game in the second period and Jessi Dullinger got the breakaway she needed to score for the Enforcing Elvises early in the second period. The Elvises took that momentum and ran with it, scoring again a few minutes later when Hanna Young scored a top shelf goal. The Divas were not without their scoring chances, but goalie Lydia Brown was having a great game for the Elvises and the score remained 2-0 at the end of the second period.
Things were looking grim for the Dealing Divas when, halfway through the third period, they still were not on the board. Then, Enforcing Elvis Becky Breeding received a minor penalty for tripping. The Divas had a power play and put it to good use. Diva Lori Sivitz grabbed the puck early in the power play and broke it out to score with a beautiful top shelf goal.
The score was 2-1 Elvises with six minutes left in the game when Elvis Jessi Dullinger received a double minor for hooking and a major for boarding, leaving the Divas on a power play for the remainder of the game. The Divas continued to put on the pressure, pulling their goalie to play six on four with a minute left in the game. They were still unable to get the goal they needed, however, and when the clock ran out, the championship title belonged to the Enforcing Elvises 2-1.
MVPs for the game were:
Enforcing Elvis: goalie Lydia Brown and Hanna Young;
Dealing Divas: Kappa Reutov and Lori Sivitz.
