Former Homer wrestler inducted into HHS hall of fame

The late Shane Scott Harrington, a 1987 graduate of Homer High School who died in 2008, was inducted into the Homer High School Wrestling Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Harrington began wrestling for Service Junior High School in Anchorage. After his family moved to Homer, he began folkstyle and freestyle wrestling.

In addition to wrestling, he also was active in football, ju-jitsu, baseball and softball.

 

His accomplishments as a wrestler included:

• 1984, second at freestyle, state, 130 pounds;

• 1985, first at freestyle, state, 138 pounds;

• 1985-1986, first at III A District Wrestling Tournament, 138 pounds;

• 1986-1987, third at III A District Wrestling Tournament, 145 pounds;

• 1987-1988, ranked first in the state;

• Tad Harrington Scholarship alternate winner, 1987-1988;

• Held record for Homer High School takedowns until record was broken by Mitch Wyatt in 2010.

After graduating from HHS, Harrington continued to be active in wrestling. After graduating from Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo., he returned to Homer and became involved in the wrestling programs by refereeing high school wrestling matches and coaching the middle school wrestling program.
