Coed hockey keeps action coming with league nights

Homer Hockey Association’s Coed Adult Hockey League held its second league night Saturday.

The Red Rockets and Dark Destroyers matched up first with nonstop action as Destoryer’s Chris Owen scored in the first minute of the game. Rocket’s Travis Brown answered with a break-away deke on goalie Michelle Hatton to tie the game 1-1. The score volleyed back and forth with Chris Brown scoring for the Destroyers, followed by Butch Schollenberg and Steve Rich scoring for the Rockets giving the Rocket’s a 3-2 lead.

The Rockets continued to dominate the second period. Josh Weston and Jen Jiron each scored early for the Rockets. It was looking grim for the Destroyers when the end of the second period found them behind 5-2. The Destroyers hit their stride in the third period when Tracey Tillion scored right off the bat. Steve Nevak and Sean Hatton continued scoring for the Destroyers. The score was 5-5 Rockets with four minutes remaining in the third period. Then, Steve Delehanty scored for the Destroyers to take the lead. Excitement built when the Rocket’s pulled their goalie with only 30 seconds left in the game and Charlie Johnson took control of the puck, firing off a top-shelf shot with less then two seconds left to end the game in a tie. MVP for the game was goalie Charlie Stewart.

The second game of the night was an equally dramatic match between the Blue Blockers and the White Lightnings. Ingrid Harrald set the tone with a goal early in the first period for the Lightning, quickly answered by Blocker Vaughn Duggar, who got a top-shelf goal for the Blockers. The first period looked like it was going to end in a tie until Chris Brown managed to catch the goalie off guard and scored for the Lightening, ending the period 2-1 Lightening. Blockers dominated the second period with goals by Matt Stineff, Jose Decreeft and Jay Cherok.

Watching the lead slip away, Dylan Braund took action and scored one goal for the Lightening, to make the score 4-3 Blockers. The third period was a defensive shutdown, with no scoring.

Coincidental penalties were given to Chip Duggan and Scott Simmons for roughing at the net. Things looked grim for the Lightening until they pulled their goalie and Mike Zelinsky found the net, for a final tie score of 4-4. MVP for the game was Mike Zelinsky.
