Friday’s K-Bay 5K was a fundraiser for the Children’s Tumor Foundation’s research of neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder.

Friday’s sunny sky helped, but mostly the K-Bay 5K run was an opportunity to support the Children’s Tumor Foundation’s research into neurofibromatosis.

Organized by Denise Pitzman, whose son, Leo, has been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, the course began on the Homer High School track and ended at Kachemak Community Center.

Runners, walkers, strollers and canine companions covered the distance, some eager to set a new personal record, others enjoying the weather. More than 30 participated, but the timing clock was turned off shortly after the 30-minute mark “because we figured after 30 minutes we weren’t looking at runners who were timing their personal best,” said Pitzman.

Brandon Beachy finished first for the men, with a time of 20:23.31; Elizabeth Roedl finished first for the women in 21:35.09. They each won shirts donated by Free Spirit Wear.
