Cyclists, runners, walkers, babies in strollers and man’s best friend launch into Soles for Hospice, a 5K fun run and held Saturday. The event began at the Hospice of Homer offices and ended with a reception at Bear Creek Winery.

More than 30 runners, walkers, cyclists and a few stroller-riding toddlers participated in the “Soles for Hospice” on Saturday, Hospice of Homer’s second annual 5K fun run. Beginning at the Hospice of Homer offices on East End Road, the non-timed activity ended with a reception at the Bear Creek Winery’s finish line.

More than $650 was raised at the event, including the fun-run’s registration fee and tickets for an art raffle won by Shirley Forquer.

The event was co-chaired by Hospice of Homer board members Christi Griffard and Lise Klein Kirses, and held in memory of Doug Schwiesow. Also helping with the event were Peter Larson, board president; Michael Hawfield, board treasurer; Beth Graber, board secretary; and board members Hal Spence and Rich Kleinleder. Board members Marilyn Dugdale and Julie Shaw also helped with the planning, but were unable to attend.

Plans will get underway soon for next year’s 5K, according to Darlene Hilderbrand, executive director. As with hospice’s first two fun runs, it will honor a community member and be designed for all ages of walkers and runners.

Hospice of Homer annual volunteer training begins Oct. 3. Space is limited in the 32-hour workshop and registration is required. The fifth annual Preparing For the Holidays Fundraiser, an evening of wine, dinner and an auction, will be Nov. 9 at Alice’s Champagne Palace. Donations are being accepted for the event’s auction. Tickets are limited.
