Better uses for art money

Posted: August 6, 2014 - 2:04pm

I have never been a fan of the 1 percent for art that accompanies new city or state construction. The fact that the new harbormaster’s building includes close to $19,000 for art is just astounding. That’s a lot of money that could be used for say improving fish cleaning stations now that the Fishing Hole is finally viable.

The fact that an artist from California got more than half that money doesn’t sit well with me either. Isn’t Homer known as an artsy community? No one here was qualified?

thank you

Thank you for saying this.

I also find the cost of the building itself being $2.4 million astounding. Councilman Lewis said the original cost was $33 million but has been cut way back to $2.4 million.

To put this in perspective, the new mansion on Kachemak drive with 17,000 square feet, 3,000 square foot wrap-around deck, eight luxury bedroom suites, 13 bathrooms, a east wing pool/spa area, a home theater and a three-car garage is worth 1.3 million.

Just what the heck are they building?

And of course they should have hired someone from Homer...DUH!
