Wrestling tourney big success

The annual Popeye wrestling tournament held on March 22 at Homer High was a huge success with 370 wrestlers from across the state attending. This tournament would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors, the many volunteers who set up the tournament, moved mats, cleaned up, worked the concession stand, sold clothing, brought food for the bake sale/hospitality room, provided security, made cotton candy and coached wrestlers. Homer High School let us use their facility and HHS staff Anita Harry and Brent Guarin were a huge help throughout a long, busy day.

This year for the first time Popeye solicited sponsorships from local businesses and the following businesses stepped up to help in a big way. Gold Sponsors: VBS Heating, Excalibur Construction and East End Mini Storage. Bronze Sponsors:  Support Vessels of Alaska Inc. and Tammie Cook Doula.

Thanks also goes out to Printworks, who donated the design cost of our awesome new banner;  Fat Olives, who donated pizza for the hospitality room; and  Beluga Lake Lodge, who donated rooms for officials during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Every year coaches from other areas say they look forward to coming to Homer and attending this tournament.  We are proud to host this tournament and appreciate the support our wrestling club receives in the Homer area.
