Businesses should quit whining

Posted: July 31, 2013 - 5:31pm

Last Monday night I listened to the Homer City Council meeting regarding water and sewer rates. I was not surprised to hear the line up of “small business owners” and their employees speaking against proposed changes to the rates. I turned off the radio before I heard the vote because I had heard enough. In emotional pleas, certain business owners and employees explained why an equitable water and sewer rate structure would so chew away at their revenues that they would have to let people go, close for the winter, go belly up — whatever.

I, as a landholder in the city of Homer, have subsidized the build-out of the gas line through assessments. These small business owners will enjoy considerable savings in utility costs because of that gas build-out. So why whine?

I paid for the gas build-out. I’ve paid for business subsidies on water and sewer for many years. Can’t they just take the savings from the gas build-out and pay their fair shares on water and sewer?  They sound like Adam Smith’s worst fear: capitalist whiners.

Every lot is assessed to pay

Every lot is assessed to pay for the gas build out equally regardless if it is commercial or residential. Some of these businesses are built on multiple lots and each and every lot is assessed adding up to tens of thousands of dollars and more. So the burden is shared equally on a lot to lot basis.

water rates

Too many Delands in Homer.....As a small business owner, you'll have to excuse me if I whine about currently paying 3 to 5 times as much for the same amount of water as Kenai, Soldotna, Sitka, or Seward. Now with the rate hike -- 7 to 8 times as much. I apologize for clouding your day. Homer does not have a viable water /sewer system. The only way infrastructure is done is when everyone helps which is the big mistake this city made 40 years ago with the water system by not assesing all lots....Are you exempt from borough property tax because you don't have kids in school? How about roads I don't have road frontage on a lot, why should I pay tax to maintain your nice road Deland? So yeah fair share, we're paying for the city's past mistakes, you're getting the free ride....
