When the power went out, the potential for panic was present in a packed house full of people dressed for the beach and dancing to the bass. Instead, Roar N' Represent began to sing the sweet sounds of Island Style acapella and at once reinstated a happy and respectful environment, that came together for a great cause, raising funds for the Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic.
KBFPC, since it's inception in 1983, has always been vital in helping our community do this very thing, preventing personal panic through providing vital health screenings, health care and family planning, all provided on a sliding scale with no co-pay, as well as helping aid difficult times through counseling and education as KBFPC's P.H.A.T. program did when our community found out about brutal sexual violence between youth. This fall, KBFPC went through a bit of our own panic when we had to cancel our biggest fundraiser this past fall, Iron Chef. So it shouldn't have come as a surprise that we were able to ride through such a little glitch as electricity with grace. Still, we couldn't have done it without the aloha our community has shown us.
Many thanks to The Alibi for hosting and planning this successful event, Roar N' Represent for providing an epic dance party and great acapella closing to the night and all of the businesses who provided donations that raised funds to support KBFPC: Homer Travel, Timeless Toys, Alaska Aloha, Damselfly, Healing Hands Massage, Homer's Jeans, Blackbeary Bog, Ala Carte Cafe, KBay Coffee, Two Sisters, KBBI, Ron Shannon, as well as K & L Liquor. Of course, we couldn't have done it without our great volunteers: Melon Purcell, Heather O'Connor, Hannah Heimbuch, Megan Palma, Pam Garvey and Courtney Stage.
If you weren't able to make it, and/or are hoping to help out more, please make checks payable to Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic, 3959 Ben Walters Lane, Homer, AK 99603. Our clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5p.m. Our teen R.E.C. room hours, along with information about the programs we provide and work we do, can be found at www.kbfpc.org.
