One hundred eighty-three students qualified for the third-quarter Mariner Pride drawing for achieving at least a 3.5 grade point average or a 0.5 improvement from the previous quarter. The nine winners chosen at random were: Kannen Cabana, James Webber, David Ferreira, Vincent Waddell, Marissa Lind, Connor Seay, Daniel Wiest, Jared Brant and Carly McLean.

Scholarships, contests, etc.

Boys State and Girls State: Must be a high school junior to apply. Girls State will be June 1-7 at the Salvation Army Kings Lake Center in Wasilla. Interviews will be 2:30-3:30 p.m. April 10 at the Homer High School counselor’s office. If you do not attend Homer High, contact us for interview place and times, Girls State as well as Boys State. Boys State will be held June 7-14 at the Wilderness Lodge at St. Therese’s Camp near Wasilla. Interviews for Boys State also will be held mid–April also. The program is sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Applications are available at Homer High School, Connections, English Bay, Nikolaevsk, Razdolna, Kachemak Selo and at the American Legion Post in Homer. Homer Electric Association is offering scholarships for the annual Youth Rally in Idaho are offered. High school sophomores and juniors are eligible for an all-expense-paid week in Caldwell, Idaho, from July 7-12, to enhance leadership skills, learn about cooperatives and participate in trust and teambuilding exercises. Applications are available at homerelectric.com. Deadline is April 4.

Homer Electric Association also sponsors an electric safety poster contest for third- and fourth-graders Prizes include $50-$100 VISA gift cards Deadline is April 4. For rules, visit 222.homerelectric.com

Homer Foundation manages permanently endowed scholarship funds that provide annual awards to area students for a variety of educational and vocational endeavors. The 2014 scholarships that are currently available include: (1)  Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study/travel; (2) Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences; (3) Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students serious in pursuing a career in healthcare; (4) Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska’s maritime industry; (5) Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic Scholarship supporting students with outstanding academic achievements, community involvement, and a strong work ethic; (6) Beluga Tail-Tale Writing Scholarships provide awards in both creative and nonfiction writing; (7) Ptarmigan Arts Visual Arts Scholarship for 11th- and 12th-grade high school students with support for art materials or training. Applications may be requested via mail, phone or email, picked up at the Homer Foundation or the Homer High School counselor’s office, or downloaded from the Foundation’s web site at www.homerfund.org. The deadline is 4 p.m. April 17 for most applications. Homer Marine Trades has applications available for its $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors or prior year graduates wanting advanced vocational education and training. The applications have been sent to school counselors and are available online at homermarinetrades.com. The goal of the scholarship is to fill the positions Homer Marine Trades has available now and in the future. Deadline: April 15.
