American Legion Scholarships: Richard D. Johnson, $1,000, due March 30; American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16, $500, due April 1; Merrilyn Stock Scholarship for continuing students (not high school students),  $500-$1,000, due March 30. Boys State and Girls State: Must be a high school junior to apply. Boys State and Girls State Program educates in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Participants have hands-on experience setting up a city and state government using the existing constitution and laws as guidelines, have an opportunity to write-debate “bills” containing changes you would like to see happen in your state. Girls State will be June 1-7 at the Salvation Army Kings Lake Center in Wasilla. Interviews will be 2:30-3:30 p.m. April 10 at Homer High School. If you do not attend Homer High, contact us for interview place and times for Girls and Boys State. Boys State will be held June 7-14 at the Wilderness Lodge at St. Therese’s Camp near Wasilla. Interviews for Boys State also will be held mid–April also. Scholarships and on-line college course discounts are available. The program is sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Applications may be picked up at Homer High School, Connections, English Bay, Nikolaevsk, Razdolna, Kachemak Selo and at the American Legion Post in Homer. Homer Electric Association is offering high school sophomores and juniors scholarships for the annual Youth Rally in Idaho, July 7-12. Applications are available at homerelectric.com. Deadline is April 4.

Homer Foundation’s 2014 scholarships currently available include: (1)  Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study/travel; (2) Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences; (3) Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students serious in pursuing a career in healthcare; (4) Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska’s maritime industry; (5) Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic Scholarship supporting students with outstanding academic achievements, community involvement, and a strong work ethic; (6) Beluga Tail-Tale Writing Scholarships provide awards in both creative and nonfiction writing; (7) Ptarmigan Arts Visual Arts Scholarship for 11th- and 12th-grade high school students with support for art materials or training. Applications may be requested via mail, phone or email, picked up at the Homer Foundation or the Homer High School counselor’s office, or downloaded from the Foundation’s web site at homerfund.org. The deadline for most applications: 4 p.m. April 17. Homer Marine Trades has applications available for its $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors or prior year graduates wanting advanced vocational education and training. Applications are available from school counselors or online at homermarinetrades.com. Deadline: April 15. 

Kenai Borough Employees Association is offering three scholarships, each $500. The scholarships are available to all 2014 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, including public schools, private schools and home-schooled. Applications and instructions are available from high school counselors or at borough.kenai.ak.us. The deadline is today. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the kenai Penisula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 N. Binkley St., Soldotna, AK 99669.
