Homer student to graduate from CMA

Casey M. Coates, son of Michael and Laurie Coates, has made the dean’s list at California Maritime Academy, San Francisco, for the spring and fall 2012 semesters and the 2013 fall semesters. A senior, Coates graduates April 26 with a degree in marine transportation and a U.S. Coast Guard third mate unlimited license. He passed all seven parts of the USCG exam on his first attempt in January, earning him a special ceremony where successful cadets get to ring the school bell and have their photo taken with the admiral.

Coates plans to return to Homer to live and work for Crowley Maritime in Valdez. He said he looks forward to replacing his car and snowmachine that he sold to help pay for his college education. His mother said she is very proud of her son and happy to have him returning home to live with her — at least until he gets on his feet.
