Nov. 18-22: Spirit week. Wish the boys and girls basketball teams good luck for Small School Tournament with some Chapman Eagle spirit.

Volunteer opportunity: Speling bee coordinator. Help kids practice at lunch once a week.

Ways to help the school: 1. Donate ink jet cartridges from printers for recycling; 2. Use Safeway cards for the escrip program by signing up at escrip.com; 3. Bring labels to school for the “Labels for Education” program; 4. Donate box tops.

Through Nov. 27:  Help others by donating loose change, bills, donations for the victims of the Galena flood last spring. The class who raises the most funds wil receive a popcorn-movie party.

Dec. 12: Winter program, 6:30 p.m. Students are asked to wear dress clothes of their choice. No jeans or shorts.

Through Dec. 13: Students in grades 1-6 are invited to create a drawing for the T200 drawing contest. The winning entry will be the cover of the 30th T200 race program. There are lots of additional prizes. Deadline to submit entries is 5 p.m. Dec. 15. For information, visit tustumena200.com.

Note: Please check the lost and found boxes near the front entrance and by the kindergarten wing. They are filling up. Remember to write your child’s name with a permanent marker on their belongings so, if they are misplaced, it is easier to return them.

Contests, Scholarships, Exchange

Veterans of Foreign Wars: VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point announces the “Voice of Democracy” scholarship competition. More than 50,000 high school students compete annually for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.” VFW Post 10221 will award a first, second and third place winner for local entries. Deadline is Nov. 22. 4H summer exchange program: Alaska youths ages 13-18 may apply for the 4H summer exchange program to Japan which will be July 11-Aug. 9. Participants are hosted by a Japanese youth of the same gender and similar age and share in their daily activities. Participants do not need to speak Japanese. Outbound exchange coordinator Jill Holmgren said they just need a curiosity about other cultures and an interest and willingness to try new things and make new friends.
