Facilities upgraded in time for 2013-2014 school year

It isn’t just books, pencils, paper and teachers awaiting students of the Kenai Peninsula Bolrough School District.  While youngsters from prekindergarten to 12th grade had the summer away from their studies, the district’s maintenance crews were hard at work.

From top to bottom, inside and out, school buildings throughout the district received some special attention.

Some of the projects were started last year and finished this year.

Some, like the new playground
equipment at West Homer Elementary School, were done with input from students, according to WHES Principal Raymond Marshall.

Following is a list of upgrades made to schools on the southern peninsula since the end of the 2012-2013 school year, provided by Pegge Erkeneff, the district’s communications officer:

•Chapman Elementary School: new roof, with the work begun last year and completed this summer;

•Homer Middle School: new bleachers;

•McNeil Canyon Elementary School: resilient, or vinyl, tile replacement in the gym, new carpet in room 21;

•Nanwalek School: new playground equipment to go with existing play stations and structures;

•Ninilchik School: new roof, with the work begun last year and completed this summer; new carpet in hallways.

•Paul Banks Elementary School: new carpet for room 20;

•West Homer Elementary School: new carpet for all hallways with the exception of the east hallway extension; new playground equipment to go with existing play stations and structures.

And that’s just the southern peninsula. Among other work done on district facilities during the summer were roofs for Cooper Landing, Kaleidoscope, Moose Pass and Soldotna schools.
