Pre-Kindergarden Title I Assessments

Children who will be four years old by Sept. 1 have an opportunity to attend pre-kindergarten classes at their local area school in the fall. To qualifys, parents and guardians must:

1. Contact their local area school to scheule a Pre-K assessment;

2. Complete a Pre-K application available at the school office or on the web at http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/departments.aspx?id=152;

3. Return the application to your neighborhood school office during school hours and schedule your child’s assessment prior to the date for your neighborhood school.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Icicle Seafoods, Inc., Homer, will grant up to three $500 scholarships. They are open to any graduating student from the Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Seldovia and Homer areas. Interested students need to submit a cover letter and resume with references to their school counselor. Students do not have to be A or B students to be considered. The committee may desire to award scholarships to students showing promise of success. Applications must be submitted by May 6 to a school counselor. Personal interviews may be conducted and, if so, applicants will be notified of the date and place of interview.   

The International Pacific Halibut Commission funds several merit scholarships to support university, technical college and other post-secondary education. Generally, a single scholarship valued at $2,000 per year will be awarded. Scholarships are renewable annually for the normal four-year period of undergraduate education, subject to maintenance of satisfactory academic performance. Applications for the 2013 Student Art Scholarship are now available at Ptarmigan Arts, 471 Pioneer Ave., on the gallery’s website, ptarmiganarts.com, and on the Homer Foundation’s website, homerfund.org. Details can be found on the guidelines page pertaining to who is eligible, amount granted and how to apply. The deadline for artwork and aplications to be dropped off at the gallery is May 3.
