Nanwalek teens earn ‘Spirit of Youth’ award
The Nanwalek Summer Youth Group has been chosen 2013 Spirit of Youth award winners in the Cultural Activities category based on contributions to their community.
The youth group was selected by the Spirit of Youth’s teen advisory council after reviewing more than 130 nominations.
The teen members of the Nanwalek Summer Youth Group serve village elders by chopping wood, cleaning houses, delivering traditional foods and putting away fish for the winter.
Spirit of Youth Award winners will be honored at the Anchorage Downtown Marriot at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The awards program seeks to change community perceptions about Alaska’s teens by highlighting youths’ accomplishments that demonstrate teens’ caring contributions.
In its 15th year, the awards dinner recognizes the efforts of these future leaders who utilize this opportunity to share their inspiring and heart-warming stories. The dinner honors 20 individuals and groups receiving top honors in their respective award categories.
Guests at the event include the families and supporters of the awardee, community leaders, educators and dignitaries. Tickets can be purchased at www.spiritofyouth.org
The Spirit of Youth awards are made possible by contributions from Alaska Airlines,the Alaska Mental Health Trust, the Atwood Foundation, BP, Era Alaska, the Machamer Charitable Fund, Mat-Su Health Foundation and the University of Alaska College Savings Plan.
