American Legion Auxiliary offers a $500 scholarship award for high school seniors (B-C student), Auxiliary Unit 16 scholarship, deadline is April 1. Western District American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship, $500-$1,000. For continuing students who are members of the Legion family. Due March. 31. The Homer Foundation has announced the 2013 scholarship applications now available. The foundation manages permanently endowed scholarship funds that provide annual awards to area students for a variety of educational and vocational endeavors. The scholarships currently available include:
1) Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study/travel;
2) Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences;
3) Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students serious in pursuing a career in healthcare;
4) Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska’s maritime industry;
5) Diane Wambach “Shoot for the Stars” Scholarship supporting education and training for young people with a plan to pursue their dream;
6) Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic Scholarship supporting students with outstanding academic achievements and a strong work ethic;
7) Beluga Tail/Tale Writing Scholarships that provide awards in both creative and nonfiction writing.

The application deadline is 4 p.m., Thursday, April 18, for all applications. Homer Marine Trades Association is sponsoring a scholarship for the first time this year. It is offered to students planning to attend or registered at a qualified trade or technical school. Applications are available from school counselors or online at www.homermarinetrades.com. Deadline to apply is April 15.
The International Pacific Halibut Commission funds several merit scholarships to support university, technical college and other post-secondary education. Generally, a single scholarship valued at $2,000 per year will be awarded. Scholarships are renewable annually for the normal four-year period of undergraduate education, subject to maintenance of satisfactory academic performance. The Kachemak Board of Realtors will award three $1,000 scholarships to one or more applicants who are graduating high school students from the Homer, Anchor Point and Ninilchik areas with plans to pursue career training in a vocation-technical field or a two- or four-year college degree. The application packet must include a short essay outlining future goals and career plans, school activities, awards and achievements, employment, community service, interests and hobbies; two letters of recommendation; and an official high school transcript. No minimum grade point average required, but a personal interview may be required. The criteria for granting the awards includes character, leadership, work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit and overall presentation. KBEA (Kenai Borough Employees Association) Scholarship committee is currently accepting applications for four scholarships, $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2013 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, including public, private and home schools. Applications for the 2013 Student Art Scholarship is now available at Ptarmigan Arts on 471 Pioneer Ave, on the gallery's website (www.ptarmiganarts.com) and on the Homer Foundation's website (www.homerfund.org). Details can be found on the Guidelines page pertaining to who is elligible, amount granted and how to apply. The deadline for applications and artwork to be dropped off at the gallery is Friday May 3, 2013.
