Alaska State Troopers last week charged a Homer man with driving under the influence after investigating a report that a Jeep was in the Anchor River near Mile 162.5 Sterling Highway. Christopher Dawson, 52, also was charged with protection of fish and game-operating a motor vehicle in a salmon stream.

According to a criminal complaint by Trooper Luke Kumfer, at about 3:40 p.m. Aug. 19, troopers received a report that a Jeep was in the river. Kumfer wrote that he went to the area and saw a wet Jeep parked near a campsite about 8 feet from the river. Dawson sat with friends by a campfire and had wet pants and shoes, the trooper wrote. Kumfer said Dawson told him he had just bought the Jeep and was testing it out. He said he drove the Jeep to the island. Kumfer asked Dawson to perform field sobriety tests, and Dawson performed poorly on them, Kumfer wrote. Dawson had a .096 breath-alcohol level on a Datamaster test.
