Still time to nominate Mr. Homer contestants

Posted: January 23, 2014 - 11:00am

Homer Winter Carnival is only two weeks away, and Genny Miller has been working closely with the Lions Club on reviving the Mr. Homer Pageant. There is still time to submit candidates, but please move fast. If you know a fun Homer resident that deserves to be dragged out on stage and be, well, let’s go with “admired” here, please go to our Facebook page and nominate the lucky guy soon.

On to other developments. After what seems like hundreds of hours of planning, researching, designing, permitting and applying, it seems the HWC Opening Ceremonies have passed all the tests, and we will have fireworks. (Remember that dragon rumor from last week?)

There also is news on the Outhouse Race.

Elks answer Legion’s Outhouse Race re-challenge: “Thank you for reminding us that Legionnaires drive dirty excavators and road machinery. We will make plenty of parking space for you when Legionnaires come to wash our vehicles dressed like idiots after we out-outhouse you. Game on, Post 16.”

Alibi accepts: “The Alibi not only laughs at Kharacters Bar’s feeble floundering while fumbling at finding fleeting fame. Alibi hereby re-challenges Kharacters by proposing the following bet. The entire loser group shall assemble at the winning club and sing a two-minute tribute song to the winners.”

... And things just keep heating up.

And finally, to help sell buttons, HWC is giving away $1,000 in cash and prizes to “Button Buyers.” To win, just buy a button. And way to go, Homer. Our best estimate is that the HWC has already raised around $2,000 for Homer nonprofits, and we’re just getting started. Seeing the crazy buttons we have in this our first year of collectibles makes me smile. I can’t wait to see the next 10 years of Homer history and humor recorded on HWC buttons. If you want to be on a button this year call Dax at 299-0319. Thirty years from now your kids are going to wear them to the 30th button-anniversary party. You could be a selfy on their hat.

If we average selling one button to every Homer person, it will raise more than $10,000 for our local nonprofits. Wouldn’t that be nice?

More coming next week.
