Through Dec. 24: 

Gift wrapping by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 at Ulmer’s; contact 235-3262.

Salvation Army Red Kettle program at Safeway and Ulmer’s; to volunteer call 235-2609.

Dec. 19:

Christmas sweater day, Chapman School.

Skating party, Fireweed Academy, grades 3-6, 1-2 p.m.

White elephant gift exchange, Flex School. 

Christmas color day, Paul Banks Elementary School.

Dress like an Elf Day, West Homer Elementary School.

Dec. 20:

Deadline to purchase items for Share the Spirit gift trees at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, First National Bank Anchorage, Kachemak Gear Shed, Homer Bookstore, Timeless Toys, Total Office, Ulmer’s and
Wells Fargo; call 235-7466.

Share the Spirit food basket preparation, gift wrapping, at Homer High School commons, 8-4 p.m.; call 235-7466.

Dec. 21:

Procrastinator’s Fair, Elks Lodge, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.;399-1326.

Christmas caroling 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; meet at Homer Council on the Arts,
355 W. Pioneer Ave., to carol at assisted living facilities and select homes.

Santa arrives by helicopter at 1 p.m., Todd and Mary Kate Green’s home, 1.5 Mile Ohlson Mountain Road; open house noon-4 p.m.; public is invited.

Dec. 22:

Christmas caroling 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; meet at Homer Council on the Arts, 355 W. Pioneer Ave., to carol at assisted living facilities and select homes.

Traditional holiday meal, Salvation Army Church, 12:30 p.m.

Dec. 24: 

Christmas Eve skate with Santa, free, 

Kevin Bell Arena, 2-5 p.m.

Traditional Christmas Eve service with candlelight, lessons, carols and Jubilation! Bells Chancel Choir, Homer United Methodist Church, 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 25:

Traditional Christmas dinner, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10221, Anchor Point, call 235-5582.

Sorry to Grinch out, but my pet peeve is the "Countdown to (whatever). Why not Calendar of Events? The stupid "countdown" BS sounds so dam commercial it makes me wanna hurl. Countdown to this, countdown to that, countdown to hand us your money. STOP with the stooooopid countdowns!

What countdown? A moment of time? An exact sec/min/hr to what? What do we do on this "countdown"? Will something happen if we don't "count down"? I HATE that term! If you are going to say it, say it when you know why the ** we are counting down? 3-2-1 WHAT? New Years I can see. It's midnight to a New Year. What else do we "countdown" to, besides that and a missile launch?

What they mean by it is, "Countdown to Store Closings".
