Assembly certifies borough results

The six-member Canvass Board of the Kenai Peninsula Borough met Tuesday to tally 1,295 questioned, absentee and special needs ballots, as well as those from by-mail or fax precincts, of the Oct. 1 regular election. Those votes, combined with those counted on election night, were presented to the borough assembly in Resolution 2013-067, and certified by the assembly at its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

With all 30 of 30 precincts reporting and 10,666, or 25.82 percent, of 41,316 registered voters participating, the results for the ballot propositions included:

• Proposition 1, regarding increasing the residential real property tax exemption from $20,000 to $50,000: 5,359 yes; 3,095 no;

• Proposition 2, regarding education capital improvement general obligation bonds: 4,727 yes; 3,518 no;

• Proposition 3a, regarding the repeal of term limits: 5,879 no; 2,383 yes;

• Proposition 3b, regarding changing term limits for assembly members from two consecutive full terms to three consecutive full terms: 5,805 no; 2,380 yes.

Results for election races on the southern peninsula included:

• School Board District 9: Sunni Hilts, 579; write-ins 29;

• Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Medical Service Board Area, seat B: Robert W. Craig, 248; write-ins 12;

• Kachemak Emergency Service Area Board, seat B: Ralph E. Crane, 333; write-ins, 4;

• Kachemak Emergency Service Area Board, seat C: Mike Petersen, 330; write-ins, 2;

• Kachemak Emergency Service Area Board, seat D: Joseph E. “Jeff” Middleton, 416; write-ins, 5;

• Kachemak Emergency Service Area Board, seat E: Matthew Schneyer, 327; write-ins, 3;

• Seldovia Recreational Service Area Board, seat A: Mark D. Janes, 96; write-ins, 2;

• Seldovia Recreational Service Area Board, seat D: Vivian M. Rojas, 95; write-ins, 2;

• South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area Board, seat C: Barbara McBride, 1,751; write-ins, 22;

South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area Board, seat G: Clyde T. Boyer, Jr., 1,498;  write-ins, 18;
