Haunted Hickory swaps food for fun and fright

The crew of the CGC Hickory will hold its annual Haunted Hickory and food drive at the Coast Guard pier on the Homer Spit, 4-10 p.m. Oct. 30. Attendees are encouraged to bring two nonperishable food items as the price of admission. Food is donated to the Homer Community Food Pantry to help meet the upcoming holiday needs.

The ship will be open at two separate times for different age ranges and guests with different fright levels.

4-5 p.m.: Children and those easily frightened;

6-10 p.m. Ages 13 and older.

The Hickory is a working vessel and not ADA compliant. There are many steep staircases and tripping hazards throughout the ship. Moderate physical exertion is required to safely transit the vessel. Persons appearing to be under the influence of alcohol will not be admitted. No weapons are permitted. Guests should dress warmly as the staging area for the tour will be on the pier.

The Haunted Hickory has become an increasingly popular event over the year. Food donations also have increased. In 2013, more than 2,000 pounds of food were donated to the food pantry.
