Health corporation begins expected layoffs

Posted: June 4, 2014 - 4:23pm

BETHEL (AP) — The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. has begun employee layoffs that were announced in May.

KYUK says corporation officials began notifying employees on Monday.

Corporation officials have said 100 workers will be laid off and another 50 open positions will not be filled.

Another 50 positions were cut last fall.

Officials say the reduction is necessary because of a budget deficit of nearly $12 million.

According to officials, the Bethel-based corporation has seen federal budget cuts and reduction of funds from Indian Health Services. Officials say revenue goals also have not been met and reimbursements from state Medicaid have slowed.

The corporation also made hefty investments in a new elders home and medical records system.

The organization has a regional hospital in Bethel, 47 village clinics and nine regional facilities.
