Murkowski signs onto bill to avoid shutdowns

Posted: October 30, 2013 - 2:14pm

JUNEAU (AP) — U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has signed onto legislation aimed at avoiding a repeat of the recent federal government shutdown.

Under the measure, if Congress failed to pass a funding bill for a new fiscal year, existing funding levels would be extended for 120 days. After that, funding would be cut by 1 percent and continue to be reduced by that level every 90 days that a new plan isn’t approved by Congress.

The measure was introduced earlier this year by Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio and Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

Murkowski’s office says in a release that she signed on after talking with Alaskans affected by the partial government shutdown earlier this month.
