Alaska State Troopers charged a man last week in relation to a burglary and theft of an Anchor Point cabin and two trucks. Trevor K. Latimer, 45, faces charges of second-degree theft, two counts of first-degree vehicle theft and third-degree weapons misconduct, all felonies. 

Homer Police arrested Latimer on May 7 for failure to register as a sex offender when police and troopers served a search warrant at Latimer’s Ternview Place home. Troopers forced entry into Latimer’s home through a furniture barricade after he failed to respond to them knocking at his door. According to a statement by Officer Stacy Luck, they found Latimer hiding behind a mattress in a bathroom. 

According to a criminal complaint by Trooper David Chaffin, troopers received a report by Bryan Zak that an Anchor Point home he had been watching over the winter had been broken into. Troopers found the cabin in disarray. The owners gave troopers a list of missing items, including a 1994 Ford Explorer, a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup truck, a Ruger .357-caliber revolver, a Savage Model 11 .375-caliber rifle, a Monitor oil heater, fishing gear, an air compressor, silverware and dishes, and jewelry.

Homer Police found the Ford and Dodge trucks behind a home on Ternview Place. The resident there told police Latimer had parked the trucks to “keep them from being vandalized,” the man said Latimer told him. The man also said Latimer had given a Monitor oil heater to another person on the street. Troopers and police got a search warrant for Latimer’s house and said they found the Ruger, jewelry, an air compressor, fishing gear, tools and a laptop computer the Anchor Point cabin owners identified as theirs. Because Latimer is a convicted felon, he was charged with weapons misconduct for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Chaffin said when interviewed, Latimer said two friends asked him to help move property out of the Anchor Point home. The friends said it was their uncle’s home, Chaffin said Latimer told him, but “something didn’t seem right,” Latimer also said. Latimer told Chaffin he drove the Dodge to his Ternview Place home. He admitted taking both trucks and other property, Chaffin wrote in the complaint.

Latimer is in custody at Wildwood Pretrial Facility in Kenai. A preliminary hearing for him is set at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Homer.
