Homer’s Best Bets

Posted: October 3, 2013 - 11:37am

Yet another Alaska reality TV show washes up on the airwaves. Starting Sunday on TLC is “Alaskan Women Looking for Love,” about six Alaska women who head south to Miami Beach looking for goods that aren’t odd.

“Faced with men consumed by fishing and hunting, often sporting long hair and scruffy beards, these women are fed up with their options,” a press release reads.

Whew. Dudes, these Alaska women have your number. Not content that there are more men than women here, they also want you to clean up nice. Hmmph.

As Homer artist Michael Walsh said, “Reality is a natural resource in Alaska.” The Betster doesn’t know how long you can strip mine reality, but the paystreak will run out and you’ll be left with stale jokes even Mr. Whitekeys rejected. Who needs TV when you have wonderful reality staring you in the face every day? Get out, grab some awesome fall weather, and see the real world, like with these Best Bets:

BEST GAYE-LA-DI-DA BET: It’s been a year since beloved artist Gaye Wolfe died, but her memory remains strong and her art perseveres. Celebrate her career at 7 p.m. Saturday with the “ARTrageous Gaye-La” at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Her art will be auctioned to benefit Bunnell programs; preview it 5-7 p.m. Friday or visit bunnellstreetgallery.org.

BEST BIG RUN BET: Running races aren’t over yet, and this one will work those calf muscles: the Run to the Altar Half-Marathon across 13.1 miles of scenic terrain. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Homer High School with a shuttle back. It’s free, too. The “altar” part honors marriages, so bring a wedding photo to share.

BEST MOVE IT BET: In Homer, you don’t really own material goods so much as rent them before passing them on at the next garage sale. Check out the big one at McNeil Canyon Elementary from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

BEST DON’T WORRY BE ’APPY BET: Want to learn more about computer apps for kids? Check out

“App-ily Ever After,” the digital story time and app show-and-tell for parents and kids. It’s 11 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Homer Public Library.
