A few years ago, the late artist Gaye Wolfe organized ARTrageous August, an end-of-the summer celebration of art. While Homer no longer has a formal August art celebration, Wolfe’s spirit and idea lives on anyway with an ad-hoc occurrence of outrageous art this weekend, including Jazz is Back, Karen Strid’s jazz group, performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Pier One Theatre.

For First Friday, new exhibits include paintings by Linda Enfante Lyons at Bunnell Street Arts Center and Jan Peyton at Fireweed Gallery. Peyton also does a watercolor painting demonstration from 2-5 p.m. at Diamond Ridge Art Studio and Gallery on the Homer Spit. Peyton won’t be the only artist working outdoors. From 5-9 p.m. at the Homer Elks Lodge, one of Homer’s finest portrait artists, Jim Buncak, paints on the back deck, a continuation of the Elks’ Paint In series.

Cindy Nelson offers a new approach to glass mosaics, adding depth and texture to a media sometimes seen as two-dimensional with her show, “Movement in Glass,” opening at Ptarmigan Arts. At Bunnell, ceramic artist Debra Schwartzkopf shows functional art in her show, “Set the Table.” Schwartzkopf also does a two-day pottery workshop Friday and Saturday at Annette Bellamy’s studio in Halibut Cove. In other three-dimensional art, “Ocean Treasure, Ocean Trash” opens at the Pratt Museum, an exhibit looking at the impacts of marine debris on our oceans and beaches. A collaboration with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, the show includes community art made in workshops run by CACS.

The weekend also includes a studio showing and sale of former Homer artist Mike Sirl’s paintings and sculptures from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at his Diamond Ridge Road studio.
