Homer High students win at state art contest

Four Homer High School students won for works entered in the Alaska Student Activities Association All-state Art Competition, with sophomore Hayden Chase winning first place in jewelry and metalsmithing and taking best-in-show for his sculpture, “Snowmachine.” Others winning are third place, Lisa Wisner, junior, “Reincarnation,” mixed media; third place, David Woo, senior, “Snail,” sculpture; honorable mention, Brian Rowe, senior, “Soup Toureen and 2 Bowls,” ceramics.

Homer High School art department head Maygen Jannetta said each school could enter up to five works by students. Nineteen schools entered with 117 entries. Chase’s sculpture is made of found objects like silverware and is on exhibit at the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District art show at the Kenai Fine Arts Guild. Woo’s “Snail” and Rowe’s ceramics were displayed at the HomeR Council on the Arts Jubilee show and will be displayed at the high school.
