‘Dominion of Bears’ author to speak
Creative nonfiction writer and university professor Sherry Simpson will read from her work and hold a craft talk as part of the Kachemak Bay Campus’ annual Visiting Writers’ Series at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the college. A book signing with books available for sale by the Homer Bookstore follows her talk. Of Simpson’s recent book, “Dominion of Bears: Living with Wildlife in Alaska,” Homer writer Nancy Lord said, “Alaska’s three bear species and the people who love, fear and encounter them have found their truth-teller in Sherry Simpson. This journey into every corner of a last stronghold of bears and their meanings is a joy to take with such a clear-thinking and good-natured guide.”
Simpson teaches in the low-residency master of fine arts program University of Alaska Anchorage and the Rainier Writing Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University. She also is a faculty member at the annual Kachemak Bay Writers’ Conference. Previously she worked at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and the Juneau Empire and wrote columns and features for the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska magazine and the Anchorage Press.
