‘The Clean House’ opens at Pier One Theatre

Posted: June 12, 2013 - 1:58pm

“The Clean House,” Pier One Theatre’s latest play, opens this weekend, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the theater on the Homer Spit. Written by Sarah Ruhl, it’s the third Ruhl play at Pier One in the past four years, including “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” and “Eurydice.” “The Clean House” is about a cleaning woman whose parents were comedians who died not long before the play starts. Matilde (pronounced ma-chill-GEE, performed by Sierra Smith) moves to America and begins working as a cleaning lady for Lane (Margaret Quarton) and Charles (Peter Sheppard), a married couple and doctors. Matilde is still suffering the loss of her parents at the top of the play and finds comfort in Lane’s sister Virginia (Nancy Chastian), who has a vested interest in cleaning houses. As they become closer, Matilde focuses on her humor while Virginia starts cleaning Lane’s house for her in secret.

The play is directed by Peter Sheppard, his first play as a director, though he has performed and worked behind the scenes at Pier One for many years. Amy Reedy-Huffman also is in the play.

“The Clean House” continues July 6, 7, 11 and 12. Tickets are $14 general admission with discounts available and on sale at the Homer Bookstore. For reservations, call 235-7333.
