TOPS members hold convention in Homer
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) members from around the state will gather in Homer today through Saturday at Land’s End Resort to celebrate their successes.
The 2017 theme is TOPS Fiesta! Some members will be recognized for their annual weight loss after embracing a healthier lifestyle and attending weekly meetings. Many KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) members will be honored for consecutive years of maintaining their weight.
The event will start off Thursday evening with a TOPS walk on the Homer Spit and bonfire on the beach. Friday and Saturday will be filled with chapters sharing their stories with scrapbooks, story boards, including skits and songs. There will be informational workshops and inspirational presentations during the weekend. Finalizing the event on Saturday is crowning the Alaska State Queen, followed by an appreciation banquet, with a DJ music and dance.
TOPS members learn about nutrition, portion control, food planning, exercise, motivation and more. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge and without obligation.
There are 20 TOPS Chapters in Alaska. The Homer chapter meets at 9 a.m. Tuesdays at the Homer United Methodist Church, 770 East End Road. Alaska membership is $39 plus nominal chapter fees. For details, contact Rose Marie Daly at 235-3483, visit www.tops.org or call TOPS headquarters at 800-932-8677.
Men, women and teens are all welcome. Collectively, TOPS members lose about 300 tons each year, according to a press release.
