The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has earned two financial reporting awards: a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting and the Meritorious Budget Award. One of 120 school districts nationwide, and one of only two school districts in Alaska, KPBSD received the Association of School Business Officials International’s Meritorious Budget Award for its 2011-2012 budget document.
In a press release, ASBO wrote, “As recipients of the Meritorious Budget Award, these school districts have demonstrated excellence in budget presentation through understandable and clear budget guidelines; state of the art budget practices; short- and long-term goals; sound fiscal management practices; and professional growth for the school system’s budget staff.”
 The district received the ASBO International’s “Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting” award for meeting or exceeding the program’s standards for financial reporting and accountability. The district was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.
Dr. Steve Atwater, superintendent said, “Our community should be proud to know of the good recognition that KPBSD’s finance department receives each year. The Meritorious BudgetAward  earned for the past sixteen years, together with the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award earned for twenty-two consecutive years is evidence of our superb accounting practices.”
