Mariners take 1st in Lumen Christi Classic

The Homer basketball season is underway with the Mariners JV team  traveling to Anchorage to take part in the Lumen Christi Classic. The Mariners were able to win all three games on their way to being crowned tournament champions. 

After defeating the Wasilla Warrior C team the previous night, the Mariners were set to face the West Anchorage Eagles JV squad. In spite of the quickness given up by Homer, they made up for it in talent, tying the game up by halftime.

Lady Mariners defeat alumni

Mariner volleyball alumni, as well as a community member, took on the current Lady Mariners last Saturday for the 2012 Alice Witte Challenge Game. 

The Mariners won in three sets, wearing new pink jerseys supporting breast cancer awareness month and in honor of the Homer High School volleyball program founder, Alice Witte. Homer High’s gym is named after Witte, who passed away 18 years ago from breast cancer. 

Mariner wrestlers head to Seward this weekend

The Homer High wrestling team traveled to Skyview High School last weekend for its first official competition of the season. Nikiski, Voznesenka and Seldovia wrestlers also took part in this mix and match competition. 

Homer totaled an 8-11 record with 10 active Mariner wrestlers. Junior Harley Wells ended his first match in just 16 just seconds, making his opponent tap out.

“Wells took his opponent to his back and squeezed so hard his opponent just quit,” said Homer Head Coach Chris Perk.

Lady Mariners split home games, beating Houston, falling to Cordova


 

The Lady Mariners went 1-1 at home last weekend as they hosted Houston and Cordova on Friday and Saturday. 

Friday night the Mariners swept the Hawks 25-23, 25-19, and 25-15. 

Hailey Oliver led the volleyball team in kills with 11 and 5 solo blocks. Kayla Hutt contributed nine kills. Hope Hudson and Caroline Decreeft accounted for 16 of Homer’s assists.
