On Tuesday, May 26, there was the first of two readings for Ordinance 15-18 (s) at the Homer City Council meeting. The ordinance amends the FY2015 capital budget by “appropriating $621,500 from the general fund balance to the public safety building project account to fund the new public safety building to 35 percent design.”
The second reading for Ordinance 15-18(s) is June 29. If the city council passes this ordinance, the City of Homer will come close to spending one million dollars toward this monster of a building. I say, make it stop.
Last week’s Monday Homer City Council meeting was an interesting one, with more discussion about the HERC building and the question of whether to lift or not lift deed restrictions as well as a “heads up” from the City Manager’s report that the Public Safety Building Review Commitee is honing in on the HERC site as the number one choice for the new $25 million public safety Building.
Phew. It’s all so layered and inter-related, it makes my head spin.
Did you notice? The city’s wish list has a gaping hole. For the last four years a Homer Education and Recreational Center has made it onto Homer’s Capital Improvements Projects list. Where is it this year? What are we doing about this?
When speaking to Homer City Council members and city employees, they somewhat agree. Their response is that they have not heard from the people of Homer, the citizens who live here.
